What Is a Hand-Tied Bouquet?

A hand-tied bouquet is a bunch of flowers arranged naturally in the hand, then tied securely so it holds its shape. Unlike formal arrangements or floral foam designs, hand-tieds are loose, garden-style bunches designed to sit beautifully in a vase.

At Hip Poppy, we wrap our hand-tied bouquets in eco-friendly packaging, and they arrive in water, so they stay fresh until you're ready to pop them in a vase.

🌸 The History of the Hand-Tied Posy The hand-tied posy has deep roots in floral tradition, dating back to ancient times. Small bunches of herbs and flowers were once carried or worn as tokens of protection, scent, or symbolism — especially in the Middle Ages, when “posies” were thought to ward off illness and unpleasant smells. In the Victorian era, the posy took on a new role. With the rise of floriography — the language of flowers — hand-tied bouquets became a romantic gesture, often used to express feelings that couldn’t be spoken aloud. Every bloom had meaning, and posies were thoughtfully composed to carry subtle messages between lovers, friends, and family. Today, the hand-tied bouquet is cherished for its natural shape, ease of presentation, and timeless charm. Whether it’s a bridal bouquet, a thank-you gift, or simply flowers for the kitchen table, this humble design has stood the test of time — and continues to be one of the most loved and versatile floral forms.

How to Care for Your Bouquet

To help your flowers last as long as possible, follow these simple steps:

1. Unwrap Carefully

Remove any outer packaging — but leave the tying string or ribbon in place to keep the shape.

2. Trim the Stems

Cut around 2–3cm off the stems at an angle with sharp scissors or secateurs.

3. Use a Clean Vase

Pop the bouquet straight into a clean vase filled with fresh water.

4. Change Water Every 2–3 Days

Top up the water regularly and keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight and heat.

♻️ Flower Food, Packaging & Seed Paper

Each bouquet includes a sachet of flower food to help your blooms stay fresher, longer — just add it to the vase water when you unwrap your flowers.

We also use thoughtful, eco-friendly packaging:

  • Biodegradable cellophane

  • Recyclable kraft paper

  • Compostable natural twine

And tucked inside, you’ll find a piece of wildflower seed paper — a small gift from us to the bees. Just plant it in soil, water well, and watch it grow.

Once your flowers have faded, you can compost the stems, recycle the wrapping, and plant something new to carry on the joy.
