There’s nothing better than fresh flowers brightening up your home—but how do you keep them looking fabulous and how to make cut flowers last for as long as possible? Here are a few tried-and-true tips from the Hip Poppy studio:
🌸 1. Clean Your Vase
Before you even unwrap your blooms, give your vase a good clean with warm, soapy water. Bacteria in a dirty vase is the fastest way to shorten your flowers’ life.
✂️ 2. Trim the Stems
Cut each stem at an angle (about 45°) with sharp scissors or garden shears. This gives the flowers a bigger surface area to drink from and prevents them sitting flat against the vase base.
💧 3. Refresh the Water
Change the water every 2 days—yes, really! Always use room-temperature water and add flower food if you have it. No flower food? A tiny pinch of sugar and a drop of bleach will help.
☀️ 4. Keep Them Cool
Avoid putting your flowers in direct sunlight, next to a radiator, or near fruit bowls (some fruits release gases that make flowers wilt faster!).
🧼 5. Remove Faded Blooms
As soon as any petals start to drop, snip those stems out. This helps keep the bouquet looking fresh and stops bacteria spreading to the rest.
Pro Tip from Hip Poppy:If you’ve received a hat box or vase arrangement, just top up the water daily and place somewhere cool—it’s already been conditioned by us to last beautifully!
